Divorce Costs

– These cases are highly circumstance specific.  Generally we are able to start with an initial deposit ranging from $1000+  and work out a payment plan for any balances to be owed.   Ex.  Uncontested divorces can be as low as $1500 and sometimes less.  A contested divorce with children, complex custody and property issues, and certainly heading to trial may have a total cost of $7000 or more depending on how the case goes.

– It must be noted that the specific cost of your divorce or related action is heavily dependent upon your actions as a client and the actions of the opposing party.  We attempt to keep the costs as low as we can however some instances that cause a case to be more expensive are out of our hands, especially when dealing with custody or support.  Minor brush ups during exchanges while going through a divorce case can turn in to orders of protection, contempt, and Guardian Ad Litem appointed to your divorce on top of the original divorce case in a five minute time span.

– Also attempting numerous settlement agreements can be a costly way of going about a divorce settlement.  Sometimes settlements can become more expensive than a divorce trial because the wishes or circumstances of the parties is continually changing.  To guard against a client unwittingly increasing their bill we attempt to inform the client of the activity causing the increase in expenses and how it can be solved or not solved.

– Finally, the difference between a good Divorce attorney and an attorney who handles an uncontested divorce on the side every now and then and attempts to do a contested family law case is quite vast.   The choice of divorce attorney is incredibly important in the family law arena and the Lawyer fee should not necessarily be the first consideration.  If a good divorce attorney is able to keep your child support payments $200 lower a month then perhaps the fee was worth it…
